An introductory review of wars fought in the world and fifth generation warfare

Abstract

This article presents an introductory overview of the wars fought in the world especially the Fifth Generation War. The Fifth Generation War is considered a new form of warfare but before it different types of wars belonging to four generations had already been fought. The word generation does not mean that there have been only five wars in human history. Rather there have been many wars in different periods and generations. However the five generations being discussed here have a special similarity because each generation represents a specific type and method of warfare. In the first generation of warfare swords spears and other traditional weapons were commonly used and warriors usually fought in organized formations. The second generation of warfare introduced modern weapons such as cannons rifles and other firearms. In the third generation warfare became more advanced and was fought through different methods. Aircraft were used in the air while on the ground cannons rifles tanks and other modern military equipment were employed. These developments made warfare faster more destructive and more technologically advanced. The Fifth Generation Warfare is generally associated with the modern era and is often described as becoming prominent around 2010. It is an endless ideological and psychological form of warfare. It relies more on intelligence propaganda information technology and media than on traditional weapons. The enemy may not understand who is attacking from which direction or through which method. Social media communication networks and information campaigns can be used to influence public opinion. Generally in this type of warfare ordinary people or groups within a country may unknowingly become tools of the enemy.
