Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to Sufism (Tasawwuf), focusing on its meaning, origins, development, and historical evolution within the Islamic tradition. The first section examines the literal and terminological meanings of Tasawwuf. It explores the linguistic roots of the term and presents the interpretations of Muslim scholars regarding its technical meaning, with particular emphasis on spiritual purification, moral refinement, self-discipline, and the cultivation of a sincere relationship with Allah. The second section discusses the nature and authenticity of Sufism in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith. It highlights the Islamic principles of faith, piety, remembrance of Allah, sincerity, patience, humility, and purification of the soul as fundamental dimensions of Islamic spirituality. The discussion also considers the relationship between spiritual practice and the broader teachings of Islam. The third section traces the origin and historical development of Sufism and the Sufi movement. It begins with the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) during the Farewell Pilgrimage and briefly examines the political and social conditions of Arabia. The chapter then discusses the emergence of the early ascetic and spiritual groups from the seventh to the ninth centuries and examines the development of Sufism during the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries. Attention is also given to prominent Sufis of different periods and their contributions to Islamic spirituality, ethics, scholarship, and social reform. Finally, the chapter introduces the major Sufi orders (Silsilahs), including the Khwajagan, Qadiriyyah, Chishtiyyah, Suhrawardiyyah, Naqshbandiyyah, and Shattariyyah orders. Their historical origins, spiritual principles, methods of instruction, and influence on Muslim societies are outlined. Overall, this chapter establishes the historical and conceptual foundation for understanding Sufism and its continuing significance in Islamic thought and spiritual life.
